About Image Compressor

A free tool for making image files smaller, without making them look worse.

What it is

Image Compressor compresses and converts images in the browser or over a REST API. It handles JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF, in batches, with a quality control and a before and after size for every file. Photographs typically come back 60 to 80 percent smaller with no difference visible at normal viewing size.

It is free to use without an account. Paid plans raise the limits and add API access, at a flat monthly price with no per-image fee at any volume. The limits shown on the site are read from the same configuration the server enforces, so what is advertised is what is allowed.

Who operates it

Image Compressor is a product of Substrate Apps, an independent software studio building focused tools that each do one job well. There is no advertising, no venture capital, and no third-party advertising trackers anywhere on this site.

Every tool I used either metered me per image, made me sign up before it would do anything, or quietly kept the files. So I built the one I wanted: a flat price, no per-image fee at any volume, and nothing kept.

How we test

The specific figures we quote for this tool are measured, not estimated. The before and after on the homepage is a real file through the real tool at the real default quality, not a picked best case, and the largest saving quoted anywhere is the largest one actually recorded. Where a number is a typical range across many photographs it is written as a range, because that is what it is.

The platform guides work the same way. Two reference files, a 4032x3024 photograph and a transparent PNG, are uploaded to each real platform through its real interface, downloaded again, and measured: byte counts, dimensions, format, and whether the EXIF block survived. Where the platform serves the file back over the web, the stored bytes are hashed in the browser and compared against the original, so an untouched file can be proven untouched instead of assumed. Results that came out boring are published as boring, and a guide with no fresh measurement behind it does not ship.

Privacy

Images are stored privately and never in a public bucket. The only way to reach one is a signed link generated for you, which expires after 15 minutes. Images compressed with the browser tool are deleted within one hour, and files uploaded through the API are deleted within 24 hours, by a job that runs on a schedule. Metadata, including GPS coordinates and camera details, is stripped from every image by default rather than as an option you have to find. Your images are not looked at, not sold, and no model is trained on them. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
