Why your file downloaded as WebP in the first place
Right click, save image, and the file that lands on your desktop is .webp, even though nothing about how you saved it was unusual. Most browsers and sites now default to serving WebP to any browser that supports it, JPG or PNG original or not, because it is usually the smaller download. That file then hits a wall somewhere: a print shop or photo kiosk that only takes JPG, an ad platform or marketplace tool that silently rejects the upload, or a phone gallery on the other end that will not preview it. If your WebP file is animated
WebP supports simple animation, the way a GIF does, and JPG does not support animation at all. Converting an animated WebP here keeps only the frame the format reads as primary, and everything the animation showed afterward is gone from the JPG.
